Sugar Falls: A Residential School Story, has been the number one best-seller at McNally Robinson Booksellers for two straight weeks in their books for young people category. The launch for Sugar Falls contributed. A packed house snatched up all the copies, leaving McNally with a sold-out book that they hopefully re-ordered right away! I cannot wait to see what happens with this book as it’s such an important subject and I truly believe the graphic novel format allows for this story to reach a wide demographic.

My upcoming graphic novel, based on a survivor’s account of their residential school experience, is coming in December. Sugar Falls, named after an area on the way from Cross Lake to Norway House, is a story that will hopefully reach and teach many about the residential school system.

Manitoba Reads Crowns Winning Book

Manitoba Reads wrapped up on Saturday, September 24, 2011. Gabrielle Roy’s ‘Where Nests the Water Hen’ finished first in the competition. A well-deserved win. David Alexander Robertson’s The Life of Helen Betty Osborne finished an amazing 2nd place, and won the audience choice award! A great job was done by Vincent Ho in defending David’s graphic novel.

Excerpt:

“First of five authors is David Alexander Robertson, renowned for his graphic novels: a stand-alone biography of Helen Betty Osborne; and a series about residential schools and their effects, called Seven Generations. He is shivering in just a dress shirt, slacks and tie, as Diehl introduces him and remarks “Education and conversation are the best ways to combat racism and sexism.”

Powerful words, and what follows is even more powerful – a love poem read aloud by Robertson in the style of freestyle rap, embracing Winnipeg and Riding Mountain National Park. This poem resonated so heavily with me because I remember spending summers with my family at the same Thunderbird Bungalows mentioned by Robertson! I wonder if we met as kids…and then I am away, under the spell of Robertson’s voice. “You are a kite in the breeze…and I will tie you to my wrist so you’ll follow me wherever I go.””

Selected for the top 4 of Manitoba Reads!

We’re in the final round! The Life of Helen Betty Osborne, my first graphic novel, was first selected as one of 16 books for the first ever Manitoba Reads competition. It was then voted into the top 8 by the public. It has now been selected to be in the final 4 by one of 4 panelists. The winner of Manitoba Reads will be selected during a live debate at the end of the Winnipeg Interntional Writer’s Festival, Thin Air. This debate will be on September 24th. In the spirit of Canada Reads, Canada’s biggest battle of the books, CBC Manitoba is proud to present Manitoba Reads, in partnership with McNally Robinson Booksellers and the Winnipeg International Writers Festival.

The long list of sixteen books by Manitoba authors is up, and one of my books, THE LIFE OF HELEN BETTY OSBORNE, is on the list! YOU can cast your vote for my book as the must-read book for Manitobans this year.
